Ayurveda – Facts you must know about Chyawanprash
Ayurveda – Facts you must know about Chyawanprash
I am a former Professor
retired in 2016 after 40 years of teaching career spent in the academic field
of Ayurveda. Apart from teaching I have also career experience in research, quality
testing of drugs and academic and technical administration; all related to
Ayurveda at Central and State level. On this background I am tempted to write
this blog post to bring forth the facts you must know regarding many myths and
beliefs surrounding drug, food and behavioural directives and advisories
believed to be originating from Ayurveda. I will be covering the topics and
subjects having current relevance. The purpose of this blog is not to teach or propagate
anything but to make people aware about the reality. The information in this
blog will be based on the original classical literature of Ayurveda. I will
also cite some relevant references from recent research studies if required. This
blog is for everybody who is interested to follow Ayurveda or for those who have
strong reservations about Ayurveda. I will be writing more on don’ts rather
than do’s in my deliberations. The first topic I have selected for this blog is
a very popular Ayurvedic drug Chyawaprash.
Chyawanaprash
must be a hot selling OTC Ayurvedic product, particularly in these CORONA scary
days. Usually it is perceived as a general tonic for every age, every gender
and every disease. In CORONA affected days it is being enthusiastically
consumed as an immunity booster. Let us find out what classical Ayurveda has to
say about it.
First thing everybody
should understand that Chywanprash is not a general tonic, which can be taken at
any time by everybody in every condition. It has its own do’s and don’ts to be
observed while taking it. Talking about drugs it is more important to know what
is not to be done than what is to be done. If you do a thing which is not to be
done, it will do more harm than good. Not to do a thing to be done, will at the
most deprive you from it’s benefits.
As prescribed by Caraka
Samhita, Chyawanprash is prepared from the fruit pulp of Amala, Indian
gooseberry (Emblica offfficanalis).
The pulp is fried in a mixture ghee and edible oil and then cooked with sugar
in the decoction made of multiple medicinal plants. The cooked material is then
fortified with addition of honey and powders of long pepper, cinnamon bark, bay
leaf, cardamom and Mesua ferrea and
Vamshalocana. Chyawanprash when ready to eat should be thick in consistency and
should not appear like honey or a syrup. Remember it needs to be eaten and not
to be licked. The word ‘Prash’ in the name ‘Chyawanprash’ indicates its form.
‘Chyawan’ is the name of the Seer who has originally formulated it.
Regarding don’ts, Chyavanprash
should not be taken by obese, fatty, overweight persons, persons suffering from
metabolic disorders like diabetes, high blood pressure, central obesity,
increased blood cholesterol and triglycerides, PCOD and people who have a habit
of overeating. People suffering from indigestion, dyspepsia, chronic renal
failure and hepatic dysfunction should also not take Chywanprash.
Chyawanprash is very
heavy to digest, since it contains, ghee, oil, sugar and honey. The basic
requirement of taking Chyawanprash is that the digestive functioning of the
consumer should be perfectly healthy. The drug should be taken on empty stomach
early in the morning at breakfast time in the dose of approx. 50 g. with
lukewarm water. Our teachers use to advise us to eat Chyawanprash in place of
breakfast. It should not be mixed in milk or any other drink. Nothing should be
taken, eaten or drunk after taking Chyawanprash till it is digested completely.
It takes at least three hours to digest Chyawanprash.
Few words about sugar
free Chyawanprash. Some products imitating Chyawanprash have appeared in the
market claiming that it is sugar free Chyawanprash and it is safe for people
having diabetes. Variations in the original ingredients of the classical
products like Chyawanprash are legally not permitted according to Drugs and
Cosmetics Act 1940. Therefore, nobody can use the name Chyawanprash if any of
the ingredients is dropped or replaced. Be careful the product you are buying
is Chyawanprash or something imitating Chyawanprash. If one sees carefully the
name Chyawanprash is being used by tweaking it little, to escape from legal
action.
Sugar is an important
drug ingredient of Chyawanprash. It is not used as a sweetener in this drug.
Sugar has its own therapeutic effect.
Moreover, sugar or no sugar, products like Chyawanprash are basically
not made for and hence never good for people suffering from diseases like
diabetes and metabolic disorders.
To conclude yes Chyawanprash
may be having immunity boosting activity. Not only Chyawanprash, many more
Ayurvedic drugs and even a plain fruit of Amala i.e. Indian gooseberry will
also give immunity boosting action. There are no restrictions on eating an
Amala. It will be much cheaper and safe than taking Chyawanprash. So eat one
fresh Amala, if not, pop up two tablespoons of dry Amala powder or Amala supari
with lukewarm water every day and get your immunity boosted. It not only tastes
sweet but has a wonderful taste which lingers on your tongue for a long time.

उत्तर द्याहटवाVery informative . And will help remove lots of misconcept of Chawanprash
उत्तर द्याहटवाLooking forward to such articles without any biased views from genuine experts like you.
उत्तर द्याहटवाI don't fully agree with statements written against chyawanprash. In my 30 years of succesful clinical practice I have been using it widely among our own family as well. My father at the age of 86 and mom who is 82, diabetic patient but sugar levels are governed with supportive approach of Ayurveda. Both are perfectly fine, hale and hearty with no medical conditions except some age related changes.like mild joint stiffness and dryness of skin, little bit deafness, they both of them are hale and hearty. Looking into bigger picture of biggest brands in India who have record sales of chyawanprash and that being their brand leader sells in big volumes and being used. Regarding sales of the product as well sugar content was never looked as contraindications since the days of making of chyawanprash which also admitted that sugar used here is indicated for therapeutic purposes . It has kind of symbiotic effect with other ingredients and counter balances on basis of Guna and tridoshic theory concept. Many more supportive articles and research papers one can find online and in Ayurvedic texts in support of chyawanprash. Dr.Akhilesh Sharma www.ayurvedatoday.org

Thank you Dipak for your studied reply. Your observations are very true. However it is the job of State drug control autorities to see whether the quality standards of the marketed products are matching with that of API or not. We as common men can just bring it to their notice. I am writing this blog for common people. It is not for experts in the field. However they can discuss the intircies. Therefore I am limiting myself to general information. Similalry it is the duty of Ayurveda doctor to guide his patients regarding the dose and contraindications of the drug.

उत्तर द्याहटवाSir,
उत्तर द्याहटवाRight thing at a right place and time. I wish this blog activity should be continued for a long period as an eye opener for doctors and patients both .
It was very necessary to write the facts about OTC in Ayurveda, thanks for elaborating on it sir. You're article was really helpful.
उत्तर द्याहटवाSucralose, neotame
and saccharin may raise the insulin levels, so what is the basis on which the licensing authority permits the manufacturing. Is the risk and benefits ratio considered enough?
Also, as we know, ascorbic acid is water soluble and destroyed by heat. And chavanprash preparation includes heating of amla. So how does this chavanprash benefit in boosting immunity? I would like to know your opinion on this.
Dear Friend,
हटवाYour concen about Sucralose and other sweetening agents is genuine.
Regarding destruction of ascorbic acid from Amala due to heat in Chyawanprash during boiling, It has been observed and studied that Amala is unique in this respect. The Vit C from it doesn't get destroyed by boiling. However Ayruveda doesn't prescribe Amala on the basis of its Vit C content or its Immunity boosting activity. It is prescribed as a geenral gorwth promoter i.e it enhancess body mass (Muscle mass) in speciffic conditions. The effect is a result of an overall effect of the formulation and not limited to the activity of Amala alone.
I am targeting my blog posts to a common man. Hence will not be discussing scientific basis of the statements. However all my satements will have scientific basis in accordance with principles of Ayruveda.
Any way thankss for your comment and curiosity.
From
Prof Dr. Shriram Savrikar
Sir, Really this information is very useful and helpful to remove misconception about Ayurveda.
उत्तर द्याहटवाThank you. very informative. It also suggests a persistent shortfall in the practise of Ayurveda. The requirements are too broad and subjective, and the latitude to call a product "Ayurvedic" is too broad. Consider the requirements of a key RM and of the Finished Product. Why should the requirement be so subjective that "ghee" is needed. Specifications need to be tighter, particularly for lower and upper limits. These could include carbon chain distribution required in the "ghee", the extent of saturation (as seen from distribution of single, double and triple bonds), the viscosity, density etc. Similarly the finished good specification is very subjective. A paste can be characterized through viscosity and other rheological properties. These are all very easily measurable, there is no need to avoid them because they are modern science, will reduce subjectivity, improve standardization, reduce fake products, improve quality & consistency, and increase credibility. Much of the good of Ayurveda is missed out due to lack of consistency. Interested can see one of my articles under "Science & Technology" on the supply chain challenges in Ayurveda https://expertstrat.com/publications-videos/
उत्तर द्याहटवाDear Vivek,
हटवाThank you very much for your thoughtful response. I will try to use your expertise getting a chance. We are developing quality standards for Ayu drugs through pharmacopeia monographs. However the State regulatory authorities fail to implement them as they are virtually non- existant or mon functional. That is why I have started this blog to make common men aware about the need of asking the seller, manufacturers and regulators about assurance of quality and authenticity of the product.
Sir, thank you for starting such a blog. We always get new information from your presentations and now happy to get the same from your blog.
उत्तर द्याहटवाThank you sir, really it is very informative.
Namaste Sir
उत्तर द्याहटवाFirst of all I congratulate you for starting this blog so that students like me can be benefitted by your vast experience and knowledge of Ayurveda. Good explanation of Chyawanaprash , now adays very popular amongst society. Sir I want your opinion regarding Sona Chandi yukta Chyawanaprash.
